Estimating fisheries induced selection: traditional gear selectivity research meets fisheries-induced evolution |
| Much attention has focused on possible evolutionary consequences of fishing, but little is known about the patterns of selection associated to different fishing methods and practices. In general, selection induced by fishing arises from the processes of fish availability to fisheries, and fish contact and retention by the fishing gear. Of these, retention has gained most attention in traditional fisheries research and retention probabilities have been quantified for several gear types and species. In my talk I try to build an overview of mechanism through which fisheries induced selection may arise and identify the phenotypic traits potentially under selection. These questions will be further illustrated by empirical and modelling examples. |
