Evolutionary Ecology of host-parasite interactions

Most species on earth are parasites, infecting, damaging and sometimes killing their hosts. Hence, the onslaught of parasites constitutes one of the most intense selection pressure for all free-living species. Using freshwater fishes as models, evolutionary biology has made considerable progress to understand the coevolutionary dynamics among macroparasites and fish hosts, and the role of sexual selection for promoting the immuno-competence of offspring. This talk gives an overview on present activities in the newly founded group ‘Evolutionary Ecology of Marine Fishes’ at IFM-GEOMAR Kiel. I provide a perspective how new molecular genetic techniques will aide in identifying the genetic basis for the arms race among parasites and hosts, and how climate change may modulate these interactions.
